Questions of the Week

Question:

What does the Bible say about babies going to heaven or hell? A Christian friend beleives some babies don’t go to heaven. I would like to find scripture about this subject.

Answer:

The Bible doesn’t specifically state that babies do or don’t go to heaven. However, there is one example that Bible scholars have cited as an indication that babies and children who do not have the capacity to understand and therefore accept God’s provision for salvation through faith in Jesus Christ will be in heaven.

The passage is 2 Samuel 12:13-23, and it involves David’s sin against God and the loss of his child, the one he had with Bathsheba. The baby dies, and David worships the Lord. His advisors are puzzled by his behavior, and David replies, “But why should I fast when he is dead? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him one day, but he cannot return to me.”

The other thing we need to realize is that God is a God of compassion and mercy. We have to trust Him that he will be completely fair and just in dealing with all people.

With all due respect to your Christian friend, for him to state that “some” babies don’t go to heaven doesn’t make any sense. Why “some” babies and not all babies? It would be more consistent for your friend to say that no babies will go to heaven, although he would have a difficult time showing that from Scripture.
