Questions of the Week

Question: What does it mean to “speak God’s Word” in order to receive His promises?

Answer: Some people teach that if you speak God’s Word, then God is obligated to do what you ask. And they often quote the verse you cite, Isaiah 55:11, which says, “…so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty…” (NIV).

The problem with this teaching is that it doesn’t reflect the whole verse. Here’s the rest of it: “…but I will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”

It’s pretty easy to see that God will accomplish what He wants through His word, not what we want. When we think that we can obligate God by simply speaking something, even the Word of God, then we are putting the emphasis on us, not Him.

God’s Word is powerful (Hebrews 4:12) and it gives us everything we need to live (2 Timothy 3:16). But it is not a magic lamp, and God isn’t a genie.

Now, does this mean God won’t make good on His promises? Absolutely not! God is faithful and true, and He will fulfill all of His promises to us. But they may not come on our timetable, and His promises may come in ways that are different than what we want. We have to trust God that He knows what we need, and that’s what He’s going to focus on.
